History - June 2001 - First AGM

  • 23 Jun 2001

Our club founders held the inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) aboard a V/Line train from Melbourne (Spencer Street) to Geelong, a now-legendary piece of club lore. The day combined the AGM with a tour of Sykes Racing, a BBQ, and a row with Corio Bay Boat Club.

The name "Melbourne Argonauts" was chosen on the train by founder Meredith (Maxi) Williams, selected by process of elimination from a list that included "The Glub Glub Club," "The St Kilda Rowing Club," and "Melbourne Blades." There was some question about the vote's validity because some passengers had no connection to the club and may have swayed the result.

Annie South delivered the President's report; Christopher Lefler the Captain's report ("We're here, we're queer and we want to go rowing"); Jacqui McKenzie the Treasurer's report (income $0.00, outgoings $0.00, "the books balance exactly and to the cent").
