For those of you who have been involved in sporting and community organisations you will be aware of  the truism that these clubs are more than their defining purpose. Rowing clubs are about more than rowing, choirs are more than the singing, and so on. We were reminded at our first boat naming ceremony (by an Olympian no less!) that "rowing teaches us that sometimes the greatest barriers we face are those that reside within us."

In 2011 the Argonauts celebrated our tenth anniversary I have been struck by many, many gestures of support and good will from both the rowing and queer communities. Many thanks to all of you who attended our recent Trivia night which raised more than $6,000 for new boats, equipment and coaching. This is a huge amount for a community organisation and we will use it wisely. Thanks also to those who organised and attended our 10th anniversary gala dinner at which our Patron, former High Court Judge Michael Kirby, spoke eloquently about the continuing need to fight for equality and the importance of civic organisations in maintaining a vibrant democracy. And thanks to all of you who over the years who have helped us build a vibrant community rowing club.

Of course though, fundamentally we are about rowing - giving it a go, participating, being better rowers and winning medals. But sometimes I can't stop feeling that in the never-ending pursuit of the perfect row we may have gained something much more important along the way. Thanks for your contribution.

If you would like to give rowing a go, particularly as the weather starts to warm up,  please join us for our Learn to Row program . Numbers are limited and you will be coached by a range of experienced and accredited coaches in a fun and supportive atmosphere.
