Never a quiet day at the boatshed

One of the key aims of the Argonauts is to provide all members with a great rowing experience regardless of their objectives – be it active participation in as many regattas as possible or a sunny Sunday afternoon row with some friends.

For those rowers who aren’t competing over the summer regatta season there is plenty to do: Saturday social rowing, Wednesday night squad training or Sunday sculling school. However, for many Argonauts summer is about regattas – participating in them, cheering for our rowers, helping with boats, logistics, coxing, coaching and volunteering. Over the summer months the boatshed is abuzz with activity as rowers and coaches come and go and participate in our social calendar or the governance activities of the club. Above all we value the quality of “giving it a go” and over summer there is never a quiet day at the boatshed or lack of opportunity to give rowing a go.

Our second decade

During 2011 the Argonauts celebrated our 10th anniversary as a club. Our club name unsurprisingly was inspired by the original Argonauts of Greek mythology – a crew of men and women who rowed into the unknown.

What will our second decade bring ?

As a club, we have achieved many of our original ambitions – a steady membership base, participation at local and international regattas, a creditable fleet and lots of medals and fun along the way. We are proud that we have introduced the sport of rowing to over 300 new participants and that Argonauts’  “alumni” live across the globe.

We are also wondering what this new decade will hold – a clubhouse, ramping up our coaching program, continuing to improve our medal count at regattas, continuing to introduce more people to the sport of rowing through our Learn to Row programs, providing more support to the queer sporting community across Melbourne and continuing to advocate for our community’s full participation in sport free from discrimination. We are thankful for the generous support of our many alumni, family, friends and supporters. As a community club every bit of support counts and is gratefully acknowledged.

Welcome

The Melbourne Argonauts is Australia’s first queer rowing club and one of only three independent queer rowing clubs in the world.

We aim to create a friendly inclusive environment for those who want to row socially or competitively. We are a club where people meet, connect and grow in a nurturing and positive environment. We value diversity, fun, openness, inclusiveness and an active lifestyle.

We are honoured that our patron is The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG, former High Court judge and well-known human rights activist.
